Meet Calligrapher Ajab Rajvir Jandiala

Thursday, November 2, 2017 7:47:57 PM America/Los_Angeles

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANY.

I’m Ajab and I started Calligraphy Quill in 2016. I’m someone who believes in goodwill, humility and the little things- and it is these pillars that Calligraphy Quill is built on. My company’s tagline is ‘Bringing Personal Back’- which is essentially my effort in trying to bring back those small moments that make life worth living- a handwritten note, a love letter, wedding invites in gorgeous calligraphy that express how much your guest mean to you.

I offer services mainly for weddings- working with stationers, brides and planners across the nation- and also teach workshops to calligraphy enthusiasts!

Calligraphy is my meditation. Being an ambivert, it comes especially handy when I want to take a step back from social engagements and simply- create. I work with a variety of mediums - pointed pens, brush pens, markers, watercolors, you name it- and this keeps my inner Sagittarius happy and content.

It makes my heart super, super happy when someone decides to make me a small part of their big day. And excited when someone approaches me to learn this beautiful art!

HOW DID YOU GET INTO CALLIGRAPHY?

I got addicted to ‘pretty handwriting’ after I took my first cursive writing class. This was in second grade, and I haven’t looked back since. I’m an engineer by profession, so during my teenage years calligraphy took a backseat as I focused on college. However, I picked up the pens again in July 2016 and haven’t looked back since!

WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CALLIGRAPHERS?

Empathy.

For me, calligraphy isn’t just a business. It’s a business with a heart. Whenever I’m approached by a client, I put myself in their guests’ shoes and try to feel what they would when they will see, for instance, the wedding invitations for the first time.

I want people to feel a special something in their soul when they come across my art, because I strongly feel that the heart can feel things that the eye cannot yet understand.

WHAT STYLES OF CALLIGRAPHY DO YOU OFFER?

Although modern calligraphy is all the rage these days, I feel that nothing can beat the timeless classic fonts. These would be Copperplate, Spencerian and Italian Hand. In addition to the traditional styles, I have also learnt a variety of modern styles- as well as combo of both traditional and modern!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CALLIGRAPHY FONT?

My favorite font is the one that I called the Parisian. It has the elegance and timelessness of a classic, traditional font as well as the relaxed feel of the more classic styles.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE JOB SO FAR?

This is going to sound so clichè, but that’s a tough one to answer! But I’ll be honest here. My favorite jobs have been the ones where I was able to develop a relationship with my client.

There was this one job that didn’t appear to work out after I hadn’t heard back after my initial consultation. A few weeks later, the bride called and apologized for the lack of communication and requested for me to calligraph her envelopes. I was amazed at her humility and honesty, and I accepted that job. Not only was that order super fulfilling, but we built a relationship on mutual trust and honesty. And, to my complete surprise, when she came to pick-up the goodies she gave me a tip! That was so unexpected, but despite my protests she insisted on it. That was very, very kind of her.

Like I said earlier, the heart is above everything else. When my clients express their explicit trust in me, I give the job all I can- and then some more. That makes my work so much more meaningful, and makes it hard to decide on a favorite!

WHAT TIPS OR ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING TO HIRE A CALLIGRAPHER FOR THEIR WEDDING/EVENT?

Always, always communicate with your calligrapher. Especially for custom work, there’s no such thing as over-communication. Secondly, trust them. If you’ve taken the time to look at the different options and finally decided on someone, express your trust in them and let them do their thing. And thirdly, understand that good things take time- so give your calligrapher a decent amount of time of complete the job.

Meet Floral Designer Lauren Willard of Pluck Floral Design

Tuesday, October 24, 2017 8:37:23 PM America/Los_Angeles

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANY.

Hi ! I'm Lauren, a floral designer by day, book worm, dog-worshipper, and peanut-butter cup enthusiast by night! My lifelong love for flowers makes each of my arrangements, installments, and creations, a work directly from the heart. The name "Pluck" not only represents the act of picking and arranging blooms, but also the spirit and spunk behind each of my designs.

I strive to create arrangements that are expressions of love, beauty, and abundance. When I'm not playing with flowers, you can find me painting, sipping tea, and hanging out with my pet rabbit, Darla (aptly named after her Little Rascals namesake)

HOW DID YOU GET INTO FLORALS?

I have been on many paths throughout my life. Cartoonist, Fashion-Designer, Forensic Pathologist, Photojournalist, Tattoo Artist...I was always changing my mind. After graduating college (I changed my major ONLY three times) I was on track to become an Art-Therapist. Then, after some not-so-wonderful things happened in my life, I realized I was nowhere NEAR ready to help others process their emotions -- I was having a hard time handling all of mine!

So, after some time reflecting (and A LOT of painting my feelings) I realized flowers had always been a theme in my creative process, my life, my heart! I've never pursued any life path with as much passion, drive, love, and care, as I have floral design. So, I think I've finally found what's going to stick!

WHAT IS THE MOST AWKWARD MOMENT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED WHILE ON THE JOB?

I'm the kind of bubbly (or as some would term "spastic") personality that inspires many awkward moments, but I'd have to say the most awkward would be from the first wedding I ever did florals for. I TRIPPED over myself while holding a box of flowers (in vases FULL of water), and spilled the water all over a bridesmaid's dress MOMENTS before the ceremony! Whoops!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING A FLORAL DESIGNER?

I'd have to say my favorite part is that I get to use flowers as my medium for creation! I believe that flowers are a reminder from Earth of the immense beauty in small moments. So, when I get an opportunity to provide blooms for a celebration or special event, I feel like they are the best way to represent and celebrate all the love in the air that day!

ANY GREAT STORIES FROM WORKING WITH A CLIENT?

One of my favorite stories was during a photoshoot at a location that is popular for hang-gliders. While we were walking up the path for the shoot, we saw a gentleman getting ready to launch on his hang-glider! Of course, we stopped to watch. His wife was telling him the wind direction and speed, making sure his equipment was secure, and as he was launching off the side of a cliff she simply said, "love ya!" as if she was sending him off to work.

In that moment, there was this mutual feeling among us -- that hang-glider duo had found their perfect person to be with (I mean, I COULD NOT handle watching a loved one dive off a cliffside like that!!!) and all of our hearts were filled with so much love the rest of the shoot! It made it all much more magical.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FLOWER?

This is the hardest question I've ever been asked!!! If I HAD to narrow it down to my Top 3, I'd probably say Dahlias, Rununculuses, and Peonies! (And Roses...and cosmos...and...)

WHAT TIPS OR ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING TO HIRE A FLORAL DESIGNER FOR THEIR EVENT?

Don't be afraid to interview a few different floral designers before you decide on who'd be the best fit!

Find someone who not only matches your desired aesthetic, but also blends well with your personality and communication style.

I have found the best flower magic happens when I've worked with clients who felt comfortable communicating with me.

That way, if your vision changes, or you need to discuss tough things like budget, you don't feel like you're walking on eggshells.

Besides, you don't need the stress of butting-heads with your vendors, your job should be to enjoy the day!

Meet Photographer Gina Toth, Owner of Gina Marie Studios

Sunday, October 15, 2017 6:12:28 PM America/Los_Angeles

gina marie

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANY

Hi! I’m Gina, a 30 year old wife and fur-mom! I love hanging out at home with my Ridgeback/Boxer mix! Her name is Lilly, and she’s the best cuddle partner! I’m a huge fan of Dr. Who, Supernatural, and Gilmore Girls. You can find me watching a Disney movie at any given time too. I was a 90’s kid, and let’s face it, those were the best movies!

I started photographing clients right out of high school in 2005, but I say I really started knowing what I was doing starting around 2008. Since then, I’ve photographed countless families, couples, and weddings. I love being able to give people photos they can look back on for many, many years.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?

I started my love for photography by taking a class in high school. I absolutely loved the dark room process and could spend hours in the lab. After I graduated, I was able to buy the very first DSLR. That’s right, THE FIRST, the original Canon Rebel. I’m completely self-taught in editing and Photoshop and over the last 12 years, I’ve upgraded both my equipment and my knowledge to be the photographer I am today.

WHAT IS THE MOST AWKWARD MOMENT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED WHILE ON THE JOB?

For me, fighting amongst families is super awkward. Throw in the stress of a wedding, add some drinking, and you have some big blow outs during the family portrait times on occasion. It’s hard to stand back, let them hash things out, then jump back in and try to get everybody smiling again.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VENUE AND WHY?

I’ve been to a lot of great venues over the years, but my favorite so far is Highland Springs Ranch in Cherry Valley, CA. Not only can you get married under a 1000 year old oak tree, but you can also have the reception in the olive groves and let me tell you, it is simply stunning! The staff and coordinator on site are just as amazing to work with as well, which makes all the difference for the other wedding vendors during the day.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM LOCATION TO SHOOT A WEDDING?

I would love to photograph a wedding in Sequoia National Park! I visited the park with my now husband when we were first dating, and we highly considered having our wedding there. If I were able to do a wedding around the beautiful trees and lakes in the park, I would be beside myself with joy!

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED, AND WOULD PASS ALONG TO OTHER NEW PHOTOGRAPHERS JUST GETTING STARTED?

Don’t judge your worth by others in the industry. There is always going to be somebody out there who will offer things cheaper, but you need to know your value of your art. Be honest with yourself and know that the quality of your work should dictate your price. Also don’t jump the gun and charge too much when you’re just starting out, you won’t be able to justify the old pricing once your work improves.

WHAT TIPS OR ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING TO HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER TO COVER THEIR EVENT?

My advice, please do not just go off of pricing. Make sure they offer what you want, the style you want, and it’s somebody you get along with! I always suggest meeting with vendors before the event, so things are completely clear AND you can talk with them and see if you get along. Some vendors are more involved than others, so think about that. Do you really want to have a photographer or videographer around you all day who you don’t get along with? It makes a difference, and not everybody matches up perfectly. Don’t be shy to say you don’t think it’s a good match, and find somebody who is.

Meet Photographer Jennifer Wax of J L Glamour

Sunday, October 8, 2017 9:57:11 AM America/Los_Angeles

J L Glamour

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR COMPANY

J L Glamour started 6 years ago by two ladies that had a passion for capturing special moments.  What was once a lifelong passion turned into a fun business.  Over the years the business grew into specializing in wedding photography and family portraits.  We are known for capturing special memories and turning them into a complete story. We strive to make our brides happy and to make sure that our prices stay budget friendly.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO PHOTOGRAPHY?

I got into photography when I was a little girl.  I never liked being in front of the camera, I always enjoyed being behind the scenes.  When I was twelve I begged my parents to buy me my first film camera.  I wore that thing out, it went everywhere with me.  By the time I was 17, I asked my mom for her first digital camera.  It was a very compact Canon that was maybe 8 mega pixels, it was nothing to the Canon I carry with me today.

WHAT IS THE MOST AWKWARD MOMENT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED WHILE ON THE JOB?

I was 6 months pregnant when I agreed to shoot an 8 hour long wedding.  I was determined to branch into the wedding industry so I didn’t let the bride and groom know that I was pregnant.  The day of their wedding went amazing, the bride and groom was by far the most amazing couple to work with.  During the reception the bride came up to me and asked me if I wanted to do a jell-o shot…I rubbed my stomach and told her sorry I can’t.  The look on her face was priceless, she said she would never have known I was pregnant with how little I was showing and how much energy I had during the wedding.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VENUE AND WHY?

I love shooting at The Springs of McKinney.  The lighting is amazing and the landscape outside is stunning.  There is so much to capture there and never enough time to get it all in.  The staff is so welcoming and so willing to help out, it makes my job so much easier.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM LOCATION TO SHOOT A WEDDING?

I would love to shoot at the Chateau Cocomar in Houston. That venue is breath taking.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNED, AND WOULD PASS ALONG TO OTHER NEW PHOTOGRAPHERS JUST GETTING STARTED?

Don’t give up.  When you take a shot and it’s not the way you like it, take another.  Don’t be afraid to ask for help from other photographers, we have all been in your shoes one time or another.

WHAT TIPS OR ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO THOSE WHO ARE LOOKING TO HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER TO COVER THEIR EVENT?

Do your homework.

Do not hire a photographer just because they are in your price range.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, they are there to capture your special day so be sure they can do just that.  Have a checklist of the must have pictures you want.

And lastly, relax and enjoy it, trust in the photographer you hired.
